Kindergarten with Mrs. Martin
WRITING
Kindergarten writing is an adventure that involves many things!
Students will learn the basic concepts of print:
* capitals at the beginning of sentences
* thin "spaghetti" spaces between letters in a word
* big fat "meatball" spaces between words
* period at the end of a sentence
* left to right - sweep back and down progression
* writing on a line.
We practice taking basic sight words to form a "sentence stem" such as See my ___________. and then we "write the sounds we hear" to form new words. I tell my students they do not have to spell like adults, rather they should use "Kindergarten Writing" and write phonetically. Once a student gets brave enough to try - they really can write most words and I can read them!! They may be missing a vowel or two, but we don't worry. Writing is fun!
Encourage your child to write at home. Writing suggestions are:
*help write a grocery list
*write names of family members
*label things in a room
*make a card for someone
*write simple sentences.
Good beginning sentence stems are:
I like______.
See the __________.
I go to a __________.
As confidence grows, add color words and describing words to sentences.
